Analog Media Transfer Rates

There are Four Service Levels

All Levels Include the Following Preparatory Services

1. Your record is cleaned with a high-quality, vacuum and liquid based cleaning machine to remove as much dust and other surface contaminants as practical. This greatly reduces the amount of de-noising software processing required with many recordings.

2. Your record is played back using audiophile grade cartridges, turntables and phono preamps to make a highly accurate transfer. The specific cartridge and turntable used are selected to best match the quality level and overall audio characteristics of the recording. The analog playback is converted to a PCM digital (.wav) file with a studio grade outboard A/D converter and stored on a computer hard drive. The digital file’s sampling & bitrate are normally 44.1 KHz & 16 bit, exactly the same as a CD.

3. The digital file is edited to remove blank areas (lead-in, lead-out and disc turnover intervals).

DIY Service

This service is intended for those who wish to do their own signal processing and CD or MP3 disc/file creation but do not own and/or do not wish to purchase a turntable and phono preamplifier. You must have or intend to obtain a computer and software suitable for the editing, restoration and CD recording processes.

This level includes the following additional procedures:

  • The audio data (.wav) file is burned to a recordable CD (“CD-R”). No de-noising or other processing of the file is provided.
  • The finished audio data CD is stored in a standard paper CD sleeve. This disc will not play in standard CD players. A computer and appropriate software is required to convert the raw audio data to standard playable digital formats.

  • Software based noise reduction is applied to remove most pops, ticks and similar surface noise.
  • The finished CD is stored in a standard CD jewel box.

Standard Service

All normal preparatory services, plus these additional procedures:

  • Track markers are created so you may easily index your disc just like any other CD and the newly restored file is “burned” to a recordable CD. (“CD-R”). The disc data is verified by the computer to match the source file.
  • Software based noise reduction is applied to remove most pops, ticks and similar surface noise. In addition, the de-noised file is reviewed in the digital editor to verify the effectiveness of the noise reduction, and a modest degree of manual editing performed if needed on glitches the automated system may have missed.
  • The finished CD is stored in a standard CD jewel box. The LP cover (front and back) is photographed with a digital camera and then printed out re-sized to the jewel box to provide cover art. Minor photo retouching of the cover art is provided if needed.
  • The finished disc is tested over several minutes on a CD player connected to a quality audio system to verify transfer quality and that each track indexes properly.

You may supply custom cover art of your choosing; files must be in standard photo formats such as JPEG, GIF, TIFF, bitmap, etc. if in electronic form. CJ’s has scanned and camera-based conversions available if you have photos or graphics on paper media. Costs to transfer paper media to electronic form will be quoted on a per-job basis.

Premium Service

All services provided in “Standard Level” plus these additional procedures:

  • An archival grade, “gold” CD-R is used to burn the finished digital file. This type of disc has a very long lifespan for a recordable CD compared to standard CD-Rs.
  • More extensive photo retouching of the cover art is provided if needed. While it may not be possible to fully restore a badly damaged cover, it can usually be greatly improved. Printing artwork to the CD itself is available, additonal costs quoted on a per-job basis.
  • The finished disc is played in its entirety on a CD player connected to a quality audio system to verify transfer quality.
  • A second “utility” copy of the disc, on a standard CD-R, is provided for use in a car or portable player.
  • A data copy of the raw, unprocessed file is provided.
